IRFS chairman arrested while filming demonstration in front of presidential administration building

(IRFS/IFEX) - On 12 June 2008, at approximately 12:00 noon (local time), IRFS Chairman Emin Huseynov was detained in front of Azerbaijan's Presidential Administration building while filming a picket. According to another IRFS employee who was present at the scene, several people in civilian clothes approached Huseynov. One of them said, "Citizen, can I speak to you for a moment?" Then, after a couple of seconds, Huseynov was led by the men into the Presidential Administration building.

For some time IRFS was unable to get in touch with Huseynov, however at 1:20 p.m. contact was made. Huseynov said that security officers confiscated all of his identification documents and video camera. The officers also asked Huseynov why he was taking photos there. In response to this, Huseynov explained he was filming the protest. No reason for Huseynov's detainment has been given.

The 12 June picket was conducted by 11th graders who were unable to obtain satisfactory grades and cannot receive the official document confirming they have completed their secondary school education, required in order to apply to universities.
