Join the demonstration to call for release of Eynulla Fatullayev

(ARTICLE 19/IFEX) - 24 May 2010 - Azerbaijani newspaper editor Eynulla Fatullayev, 33, is serving an eight-and-a-half year prison sentence based on trumped up charges of terrorism and defamation. He was jailed in April 2007 after writing a series of articles critical of the authorities.

On 22 April 2010, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that he had been wrongfully imprisoned and called for his immediate release.

After the European Court began reviewing his case, Eynulla Fatullayev was charged with possessing illegal drugs. This new charge is widely believed to have been fabricated in order to keep him in prison. His trial on this charge is ongoing.

In March 2010 Eynulla's father, Emin Fatullayev, received a death threat for speaking out about his son. This is the third of such threats he has received.

On Thursday 3 June, ARTICLE 19, Amnesty International UK and English PEN will be holding a demonstration outside the Azerbaijani embassy in London to call for Eynulla Fatullayev's immediate release.
