Don't forget Nabeel Rajab during global week of action

Bahraini human rights defender Nabeel Rajab has been in jail since last summer for using Twitter to call for peaceful gatherings against human rights violations. He is currently serving a two-year sentence.

This week marks the Global Week of Action 21-28 March 2013, which aims to draw attention to Rajab's ongoing "unjust imprisonment, as well as the plight of all prisoners of conscience in Bahrain."

Here are seven things you can choose from to show your support:

  • Visit the website created by his supporters and download images for Twitter and Facebook.
  • Follow the campaign @dont4getnabeelr.
  • Attend a rally on March 22 in Washington, DC or an event on March 23 in Paris, London, Cairo, Kuwait or Dublin, among others. Many events will also be held in Bahrain, including a marathon and an opera.
  • Download a mask of Rajab's face to wear at a rally or an event.
  • Leave a message of support for Rajab on the website.
  • Watch and share a video about the campaign to free Rajab.
  • Find out more recent news about the human rights crisis in Bahrain by visiting a website Freedom in Bahrain created by the International League for Human Rights (FIDH), in cooperation with IFEX, to mark the second anniversary of the peaceful uprising in Bahrain on 14 February

Public support for Rajab goes a long way. Earlier this month, Rajab wrote a letter from prison to his supporters, in which he says:

"I write to you from Jaw prison in Bahrain to express my gratitude and sincere appreciation for all your persistent and unrelenting efforts to advocate my case.... I also thank you for the continuing and consistent efforts to expose and stop the human rights violations committed against the peaceful citizens of Bahrain as well as all citizens of the Gulf region. Your role has become a vital one and your impact is increasing day after day... Your hard work revealing our nations' suffering to the international community has empowered our nations and inspired our freedom loving people to continue their struggle for justice and democracy."
