Journalist attacked in Sao Paulo

(ABRAJI/IFEX) - Journalist Ademir Feliciano was beaten while working on his website Altiaqui in the city of Altinópolis, close to Ribeirão Preto, in Sao Paulo state on Saturday, 2 October 2010.

Police have started an investigation and the victim has been heard by the local chief inspector, Cezar Augusto de Frnaça. According to França, a witness identified as "Jurandir" said he had seen the criminal lawyer Edmar Voltolini leaving the journalist's office around 1:15 p.m. on 2 October.

Feliciano, the victim, was taken to a local ER and afterwards to a major hospital at Ribeirão Preto for a tomography.

ABRAJI tried to contact Voltolini, but his cellphone was answered by Roberto dos Santos, who identified himself as a "friend" of the lawyer. Santos informed ABRAJI that both men had been in a fight.

The chief inspector confirmed that Voltolini delivered a medical document proving that he had been wounded, but says that police did not find any evidence of a fight inside the journalist's office.

ABRAJI calls for an investigation to determine if the attack was related to one of the stories the journalist was investigating for his website.
