TV station news crew threatened and assaulted

(IPYS/IFEX) - On 6 January 2011, a team of journalists working for RBS TV, a TV Globo relay station, was threatened and assaulted by businessmen in Indaial, in the state of Santa Catarina, southern Brazil.

Reporter Frances Silvy and camera operators Márcio Ramos and Andrei Luiz were investigating an accusation filed at the local prosecutor's office about a possible boycott of a shopping center by a group of businessmen.

The journalists were assaulted and threatened with a firearm by businessman Vilmar Gaio, his son Diego Gaio and a security officer. Silvy was hit in the face. The journalists tried to leave but the exits to the premises were blocked and the station's car experienced several mechanical problems as they attempted to flee.

The incident was filmed and broadcast on the station's news program that same day. The reporters filed a complaint about the attack at the local police station.
