Sports journalist shot to death

(OLA/IFEX) - On 5 July 2012, radio Oficial 820 AM and TV PUC journalist Valério Luiz de Oliveira, 49, was shot to death by an unidentified attacker, in Goiânia, the capital of the state of Goiás.

The murder took place as the journalist was leaving the radio station after finishing work. An individual on a motorcycle wearing a blue jacket was waiting for him at the station's entrance. Luiz got into his car, and realizing that someone was waiting for him, tried to flee, but he lost control and crashed into another vehicle that was parked on the street. His attacker approached him and shot him while Luiz used his mobile phone to call for help. The killer fled the scene and minutes later an ambulance arrived, but Luiz had already died.

At the scene of the crime a police official told the press that six shots had been fired at Luiz's vehicle, although the number of bullets that had struck the journalist had not been confirmed.

Ten state homicide investigation police officers are investigating the incident. According to witnesses, the journalist had received threats about his opinions on the Goiás football club and the team's fans. Valério Luiz de Oliveira leaves behind a wife and three children; his father is the well-known Goiás sports presenter Mane de Oliveira. He began working as a sports journalist in 1978 at radio Goiânia. In 1980 he worked at TV Goiânia, and had also worked for Televisión Central de Brasil and TV y Radio Anhanguera Goiânia.
