Angry university students attack state TV crew

(MFWA/IFEX) - On 11 March 2011, Ahmadou Dicko, and Urbain Somé, reporter and cameraman respectively, of the state-owned television, Burkina Broadcasting Corporation (RTB), were violently attacked by a group of angry students from the Université de Ouagadougou, who accused the RTB of censoring their previous protests about the death of their colleague.

Justin Zongo, the dead student, was allegedly killed by police officers on 20 Febuary during a demonstration in Koudougou, a suburb of Ouagadougou. However, the Burknabe authorities claimed the student died from Meningitis.

The Media Foundation for West Africa's (MFWA) correspondent reported that the students manhandled the journalists and seized their camera, which was never returned to them.

The correspondent said Ahmadou and Urbain sustained slight injuries and have since been treated and discharged from hospital.
