(C-Libre/IFEX) - Tegucigalpa, Honduras, 24 May 2011 - The general manager of "La Tribuna" newspaper, Manuel Acosta Medina, was wounded on the afternoon of 23 May 2011 after being shot by three unknown assailants. The incident occurred at around 6:00 p.m. soon after Acosta Medina had left work and was headed to his home in the Altos de Miramontes neighbourhood of Tegucigalpa.
The manager was driving on the Fuerzas Armadas boulevard when he saw three armed men get out of two cars, one that was ahead of him and one directly behind. The men indicated that Acosta Medina should open the car door. The general manager sped up trying to flee as the gunmen opened fire, the "El Heraldo" newspaper reports.
Acosta Medina was shot in both shoulders, the chin, and the leg. He was taken to the Escuela hospital and later transferred to a private clinic, where he is in stable condition.
The general manager's vehicle was damaged by 15 bullet holes, found in its windshield, door and tires.
As of 24 May, the police had no leads as to the motive or who might be behind the attack.
