CJFE calls for nominations for press freedom awards

Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) is calling for nominations for its International Press Freedom Awards in recognition of the courage of journalists who have overcome tremendous odds - often risking their lives - so that the news media remains free. CJFE is also calling for nominations for the Tara Singh Hayer Memorial Award to recognise a Canadian journalist who, through his or her work, has made an important contribution to reinforce and promote the principle of freedom of the press in Canada or elsewhere.

Last year's winners were Iranian journalist Jila Baniyaghoub and "Novaya Gazeta" newspaper in Russia.

Each award consists of CDN$3,000. Deadline for nominations is 21 May.
