UNESCO to host free expression symposium in January

Join more than 300 media professionals, government officials, policymakers and civil society activists at UNESCO's headquarters in Paris on 26 January 2011 for an international symposium on freedom of expression. The one-day event will focus on the status of press freedom worldwide, the safety of media professionals as well as the changes to the media landscape in the digital age.

IFEX members, including Gayathry Venkiteswaran, the new executive director of the Southeast Asian Press Alliance, Omar Faruk Osman of the National Union of Somali Journalists and Jean-François Julliard of Reporters without Borders will talk about the precarious state of press freedom around the world.

Elisabeth Witchel, who has been working on the Committee to Protect Journalists' impunity campaign, as well as Lydia Cacho Ribeiro, winner of the 2008 UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize, will offer ideas on how to ensure journalists' safety in this context.

Another debate will focus solely on free expression on the Internet.
