IFEX members under attack

When our members have been threatened, the "Communiqué" has been there to document the violence and provide a level of protection. As early as 2002, we were reporting on the staff of Journaliste en danger in the Democratic Republic of Congo who had to go into hiding to escape threats - not coincidentally around the same time that Joseph Kabila took the reins. Yet today JED continues to be our lead source of free expression news from the country.

These days, we have been keeping a close eye on our colleagues from the Bahrain Center for Human Rights (BCHR). Nabeel Rajab was recently released after his umpteenth arrest, but former BCHR president Abdulhadi al-Khawaja, who was instrumental in BCHR becoming an IFEX member, continues to face a life sentence for plotting against the state in the Arab Spring protests last year. "International human rights groups with the help of IFEX give us support. Your support is like air for us, it's like hope for us. It is lifting our spirit," Rajab told IFEX members.
