(RSF/IFEX) – According to information released by RSF on 22 May 1998, Pablo
Hiriart, editor of the daily “La Cronica de Hoy,” made an official complaint
to the Attorney General (federal) on 19 May 1998, in connection with threats
made to him by three unknown individuals. On the afternoon of 17 May 1998,
three armed individuals in a white van with no license plates followed
Hiriart’s chauffeur. After having immobilized the chauffeur, one of them
said: “Tell your boss to stop publishing foolish remarks. This is a
warning.” In recent months, “La Cronica de Hoy” published various stories
implicating members of the government of the Federal District; for example,
in December 1997, the newspaper discovered links between the new head of the
government’s Cabinet and an ex-public prosecutor accused of drug
trafficking.
RSF considers these threats a serious assault on freedom of the press.
