(CEPET/IFEX) – On 23 July 2008, Othón García, police news reporter for “El Rotativo” newspaper, was assaulted by municipal police in the southern city of Oaxaca de Juárez.
According to García, the police officers “realised that I was photographing them while they were kicking and hitting a young man who had been detained and handcuffed”.
“When the police saw that I was doing my work, they hit me in the face and threatened to abduct me. I prevented them from beating me and they (. . .) took off,” the journalist said. The incident occurred in front of the Public Works Ministry (Secretaría de Obras Públicas) building, in Oaxaca’s historical center.
García, who has been working for “El Rotativo” for four years, filed a complaint against the officers, accusing them of assault, injuries, attempted homicide and other offences.”
