ARTICLE 19’s statement on Sexual Diversity and the Right of Freedom of Expression

ARTICLE 19 was invited to participate in a roundtable on “Freedom of Expression and Diversity”, on the occasion of the Feria de Comunicación Alternativa 08′ (Alternative Communication Fair ’08 that was held in Mexico City on October 23 and 24. The importance of freedom of expression and access to information without discrimination and free of attacks on the LGBTI community was stressed, highlighting the importance for the State to guarantee everyone’s right to express their gender and sexual identity and to disseminate ideas and information freely.
In this regard and in light of the recent amendments to the Civil and Procedural Codes in Mexico City which allow the LGBTI community to legally change their gender identity, ARTICLE 19 together with Agenda LGBT and DECIDIR, presented the statement. In this document, one’s right to express sexual and gender identity, as well as the role that freedom of expression plays in eliminating prejudice were discussed. The statement contains specific recommendations to the State and private broadcasters for guaranteeing freedom of expression of the LGBTI community and urges the State to establish public policies that help eradicate prejudice and discrimination.
