(CEPET/IFEX) - Miguel Ángel Jiménez Godínez has temporarily vacated his position as general manager of the National Lottery and has left the New Alliance Party (Partido Nueva Alianza, PANAL) after the Megamedia publishing group accused him of attempted bribery.

Appearing before members of Congress, Jiménez Godínez denied that he had attempted to use federal resources to bribe directors of the "Diario de Yucatán" newspaper in order to benefit members of the National Action Party (Partido Acción Nacional, PAN) in the state of Campeche. Jiménez Godínez said that he did meet with personnel from the newspaper's marketing division, but only in order to renew contracts that had been cancelled the previous year.

Jiménez Godínez accused the newspaper's directors of orchestrating a campaign against him and said that he was leaving his political party and his position as head of the lottery in order to facilitate an investigation into the possible misuse of federal funds.

On 1 April 2009, "Diario de Yucatán" published an article stating that Jiménez Godínez offered personnel from Megamedia, the newspaper's publisher, an advertising contract for three million pesos (approx. US$220,000) to be charged to the National Lottery in order to promote PAN candidates in the state of Campeche, in southern Mexico.
