Journalists attacked

(FNJ/IFEX) - Bimal Gautam and Dip Rayemaji of Kantipur Television, Badri Sigdel, Kumar Lamichhane and Cameraperson Ghanashyam Sharma of Nepal One Television, and Kiran Chapagain of "Kathmandu Post" were attacked by the relatives of former chairman of Small Cottage Industries Development Bank, Sitaram Prasain, at around 5pm (local time) on 27 June 2007 at Kathmandu district court, Babarmahal, Kathmandu.

According to journalist Gautam, relatives of Prasain, mostly female, gathered on the court premises and attacked the journalists and cameramen. They shouted slogans against the scribes for giving excessive coverage to the case.

Prasain was handed over to the police by the Maoist aligned Young Communist League (YCL) in connection with a bank default case some weeks ago.

The Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ) has condemned the incident and has expressed its concern over the attacks on journalists in such a highly regarded place as a court. Journalists have a duty to present all sides of an issue. No one can force the journalists to present news in their favor. The Federation has also urged the government to ensure the safety and security of journalists and to take immediate action against the guilty.
