Striking staff at cable association block broadcast of national television stations

(FNJ/IFEX) - Striking employees at the Nepal Cable TV Association are obstructing the broadcasting of the state-owned broadcasting corporation, Nepal Television, and other national television channels.

Nepal Television and NTV-2 have been blocked since 13 August 2007, while other channels have been blocked since 18 August. Employees of the association are on strike to demand, among other things, a decrease to their renewal fees and the authority to broadcast local programmes. They have threatened to interfere with the broadcasting of foreign television channels as well if the government does not fulfill their demands.

The FNJ has asked the staff of the association to resolve their problems through dialogue and not to block the broadcasting of these channels. The FNJ asserts that to cut off broadcasts and hinder the free flow of information is a violation of the public's the right to information. The hijacking of peoples' rights to pressure for collective demands should be stopped. In a press release, the FNJ said that it does not oppose the demands of the association's staff, but requests that they find an alternative way of advocating for them.
