(FNJ/IFEX) – Nemling Lama, vice president of the Sindhupalchowk chapter of the FNJ and also a correspondent for Nepal Television, was accosted while covering a clash between a sandalwood smuggler and a local resident on 30 August 2007 at Barabise, Sindhupalchowk, a central district of Nepal.
Lama was accosted while covering news about the smuggling of contraband red sandalwood across the Chinese border, said FNJ Sindhpalchowk president Rishiram Paudel. Apparent associates of the smuggler targeted Lama and stole his camera in order to hinder his coverage of the affair.
FNJ has condemned the incident and has urged the persons responsible to apologize and publicly commit themselves to not repeating such behavior in the future. FNJ has also demanded that the authorities take firm action against those involved in accosting the journalist.
