(FNJ/IFEX) – On 23 October 2007, Rameshowr Bohara, special correspondent for “Himal Khabar Patrika”, was attacked by a group of hooligans while he was on his way home to celebrate Dashain, a Hindu festival, in Dhodhari village, Bipatpur, located in Baridaya, a mid-western district of Nepal.
According to Bohara, the group attacked him, shouting: “He is the journalist and is acting smart.” Bohara said that he could recognize only Keshav KC and Krishna KC, locals of the village. He could not recognize others as it was dark. Bohara has filed a complaint at the District Police Office in Bardiya.
The group also broke into Bohara’s house the night of the same day and tried to attack him with khukuri, a sharp weapon.
FNJ condemns the incident and urges the government to identify and punish the guilty immediately. It is wrong to attack journalists for fulfilling their duty. FNJ also asked the government to provide protection to journalists and to create safe working environment for the practice of their profession.
