(FNJ/IFEX) – Birendra K. M, a local correspondent of “Rajdhani Daily” newspaper and “Sagarmatha Television” was beaten by police personnel of the Armed Police Force on 6 December 2007 at Inaruwa, in Sunsari, an eastern district of Nepal.
Birendra K.M. was beaten by police personnel while he was covering clashes between local businessmen and police over fertilizer smuggling, said Govinda Ghimire, president of the FNJ Sunsari chapter. According to Ghimire, the police personnel took Birendra K.M. inside a van when he reached the site, removed the film roll from his camera and thrashed him.
FNJ has harshly condemned the incident and considers it shameful that journalists are being attacked time and again by security personnel. FNJ has urged the government to take strong action against those responsible and to protect media personnel.
