Two editors threatened by student union leaders for covering reports of fraud

(FNJ/IFEX) - "Lokbarni Weekly" editor, Prem Prasad Paudel, and assistant editor, Prakash Chandra Bhattarai, have been threatened over recent days by the local leaders of the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) student union in Tanahu, a western district of Nepal.

According to Pradeep Kafle, president of the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) Tanahu Chapter, the two journalists have received threats in response to articles published in local newspapers about an incident of alleged fraud by a former central member of the All Nepal National Free Student Union. The individual in question had apparently received treatment and funds by presenting fake documents and showing his name as one on the list of injured people in the people's movement to the Direction and Management Committee, Lalitpur. The government is providing relief funds to those people who were injured during demonstrations by the people's movement.

FNJ has condemned the incident and asserted that no one should threaten journalists on the basis of news that has been disseminated. FNJ has urged government to take strong action against the guilty and provide security to media professionals.
