Party militants assault, threaten to kill journalists over election coverage in Nuwakot

(FNJ/IFEX) - On 13 April 2008, Maoist party workers threatened to kill journalists of Nuwakot, a central district of Nepal, who were covering the Constituent Assembly elections.

According to a press release issued by Rajumitra Khanal of FNJ, the Maoist individuals involved shouted threats against journalists Prakash Kumar Adhikari of "Kantipur Daily", Raj Krishna Shrestha of Kantipur Television, Kapil Dev Khanal of Image Television and Dev Chandra Bhatta of Avenues Television. The journalists were threatened for their reporting on the elections.

On 14 April, Santosh Rijal, correspondent of "Nuwakot Awaj Weekly" and a member of FNJ's Nuwakot chapter, was assaulted by party workers of Nepali Congress for similar reasons.

FNJ strongly denounces such attacks on media personnel by anyone, regardless of political affiliation.
