Two newspaper correspondents assaulted by Khandbari youths over critical coverage

(FNJ/IFEX) - Rajdhan Rai and Kishor Budhathoki, correspondents of "Naya Patrika" and "Annapurna Post" dailies respectively, were attacked by youths of the Khandbari Yuba Club on 20 July 2008 at Khandbari, Sakhuwasabha region, in eastern Nepal.

According to the press release issued by FNJ's Sankhuwasabha chapter, the two journalists were beaten and their faces daubed with black paint because of their news coverage. During the attack, the youths asked the journalists why they had published information on an incident during which the youth took away furniture belonging to the Khandbari District Office.

The FNJ denounces the incident as barbaric and urges everyone to use their legal right to insist that a media outlet publish their response to coverage they believe unfair. It also asks the government to punish the perpetrators immediately.
