(FNJ/IFEX) – Abadesh Jha, the vice-president of the Federation of Nepali Journalists’ (FNJ) Saptari chapter, and Sanatan Mandal, a news correspondent for News Today, were attacked on 5 November 2008 at around 8:00 pm (local time) by an unidentified group at the Tiffin Room Hotel, in Biratnagar-14, Morang, eastern Nepal.
Sambhu Bhandari, the FNJ’s Morang chapter president, said that a group of about four or five people held the two journalists for about twenty minutes while physically assaulting them. The attackers also took away their cell phones and cash. The reason for the attack is not yet known.
The FNJ denounced the attack on the journalists and showed serious concern in its press release over the increasing numbers of attacks on media personnel by both known and unknown groups. The FNJ also urged the government to be more serious about the security of journalists.
