Journalist gets death threat from leader of revolutionary group

(Freedom Forum/IFEX) - Freedom Forum is concerned over death threats issued against Narma Dev Yadav, a reporter for Chhinnamasta FM and Aajakao Batabaran daily, by the leader of the Janatantrik Mukti Morcha (JMM), a revolutionary group, in the eastern Saptari district of Nepal.

Binaya Kumar Saha (aka Agni Bidrohi) of the JMM threatened journalist Yadav with death on October 29, 2010 following a news report related to the JMM.

"Saha threatened me because I didn't write the news report as per their wish," said journalist Yadav. "I am not sure whether they will take any untoward action against me." Following the threat, journalist Yadav demanded protection from the government.

Freedom Forum demands an immediate police investigation into the threats against Yadav and for police to take action against those responsible for the incident, in order to end the culture of impunity in the Terai region of Nepal. Freedom Forum calls on the government to provide enough security for the journalist in order to stop further threats to his safety.
