Freedom Forum welcomes life imprisonment ruling for killers of journalist Uma Singh

(Freedom Forum/IFEX) - Freedom Forum welcomes the 11 June 2011 decision of the Dhanusha District Court sentencing Lalita Singh and Nemlal Paswan to life in prison for the killing of journalist Uma Singh. The decision came two years after Singh was murdered.

Freedom Forum welcomes the decision by the State authority as a step towards ending the culture of impunity in Nepal.

However, Umesh Yadav, aka Swamiji Yadav, who claimed responsibility for ordering the murder, is still at large.

Uma Singh was hacked to death on 11 January 2009 in Janakpur, a city on the southern plain in the eastern part of the country. She had worked for the FM radio station Janakpur Today, where she reported mainly on women's rights issues and spoke out against the dowry system.

Freedom Forum, as an organization working for media freedom, human rights, democracy and the right to information in the Nepal, urges the government to immediately arrest the mastermind behind Singh's murder and bring him to book.
