PPF CALLS FOR NOMINATIONS FOR PRESS FREEDOM AND GENDER IN JOURNALISM AWARDS

The Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF) invites nominations for the Aslam Ali award, which honours journalists or organisations that have made a notable contribution to the defence and promotion of press freedom in Pakistan. PPF is also calling for nominations for its Gender in Journalism Awards for outstanding reporting by a female journalist and gender sensitive reporting.

The Aslam Ali Press Freedom Award is named after the former founding trustee of PPF, who was listed in 2000 as one of 50 world press freedom heroes by the International Press Institute. The annual award, supported by UNESCO, carries a cash prize of 100,000 Rupees (US$1,250). Individuals and organisations working in the field of media and human rights can nominate themselves or other candidates for the award. The deadline is 15 November 2008.

Entries are also invited for PPF's two Gender in Journalism Awards, also underwritten by UNESCO. One award honours excellence in gender sensitive reporting and is open to male and female journalists, while the other is for outstanding coverage of any issue by a female journalist. They are valued at 50,000 Rupees (US$625) each. Entries must be submitted no later than 1 November 2008.
