Journalist beaten unconscious by striking teachers, hospitalised; his camera broken

(IPYS/IFEX) - On 19 July 2007, journalist Carlos Carrillo Berbeño, a correspondent for the newspaper "La República" and for the radio station Radio Programas del Perú, was beaten by a mob of striking teachers as he was covering the strikers' attempt to take over the facilities of Cusco airport, in southern Peru.

Carrillo Berbeño stated to IPYS that his assailants destroyed his camera, threw him to the floor and kicked him unconscious. The intervention of a member of the Ombudsman's Office prevented the beating from continuing; the journalist was admitted into the hospital in Cusco.
