(IPYS/IFEX) – On 9 April 2008, a group of sports journalists were forbidden to enter the Rosas Pampa stadium in the city of Huaraz, northwestern Peru, where they were due to cover the opening match of a professional football championship.
Even though they have the accreditation required for entrance to any stadium in the country, the journalists were informed that, following orders from Congressman José Mallqui, who is also the president of Club Sport Áncash, one of the teams playing that day, only a small group of journalists would be allowed to cover the event. The journalists told IPYS that the order to bar them was given in revenge for their coverage of Mallqui’s much-criticised administration of the club.
IPYS protests against this arbitrary measure, which restricts press freedom.
