Journalists assaulted by labour leaders while covering regional strike

(IPYS/IFEX) - On 10 April 2008, journalists Marbella Mamani, David Gonzáles and Enrique del Águila, of La Karibeña radio station, were assaulted by members of the General Confederation of Peruvian Workers (Confederación General de Trabajadores del Perú, CGTP). The incident occurred while the news team was covering a regional strike organised in support of a group of indigenous people who are detained in Andoas, Datém del Marañón province, Loreto region, in north eastern Peru.

Mamani told IPYS that a number of drunken protesters attacked the vehicle she was in to stop her from reporting on the strike. There was some damage to the car. When Gonzáles and del Águila approached to help their colleague, they were insulted and hit by the protesters.

According to the news team, the attack came as a reprisal for the station's reports suggesting that the strike had not been very successful.

Manuel Colorado Lino, secretary general of the CGTP's Loreto section, recognised that his colleagues had acted unacceptably and said that the cost of repairing Mamani's vehicle will be covered by the union.
