Independent media outlets barred from covering opening of highway

(IPYS/IFEX) - On 17 March 2009, approximately thirty journalists from the Loreto and San Martín regions in northeastern Peru were prevented from covering the opening by Peruvian President Alan García Pérez of a highway that joins the two regions.

The journalists told IPYS that they went to cover the event, but Government Palace and National Police officers informed them that they would not be allowed in based on orders issued by the central government. The only media authorised to cover the event were the state-owned Canal 7 television station and Agencia Andina.

The journalists protested by placing their cameras, tape recorders and microphones on the highway.

IPYS calls on the government to respect the press's right to report on issues that are of interest to the public.
