Journalist shot on his way to radio programme in Peru

(IPYS/IFEX) - 6 February 2013 - On 5 February 2013, journalist Juan Carlos Yaya Salcedo was shot by three unidentified men while on his way to the facilities of Radio Max to present his program "Sin Escape". The incident took place in Cañete, Lima region, south of the capital.

The journalist told IPYS that he was going from home to work on his motorcycle when three men shot him point-blank with a handgun through the window of a blue car, wounding him in the thigh.

The car fled and the reporter was left lying on the road, with entry and exit bullet wounds in the leg. Yaya was assisted by municipal police and taken to a health center.

The journalist said he was unaware of the reasons for the attack. However, he told IPYS that over the last three weeks he had been reporting on his radio program on some irregularities that had been taking place in the District Municipality of Nuevo Imperial, implicating the management of Mayor Zulma Matumay.

Yaya's relatives filed a formal complaint with the Cañete police.

IPYS condemns the attack against Juan Carlos Yaya and calls on the authorities to immediately investigate the events to punish those found responsible for this deplorable aggression.
