Filipino reporter survives slay attempt

(CMFR/IFEX) - A freelance reporter in Bacoor City, Cavite survived two gunshot wounds in a slay attempt on the morning of 6 March 2013. Bacoor City, Cavite is about 20 kilometers south of Manila.

Two unidentified men riding a black motorcycle shot Domingo Valdecantos Jr. twice in the back inside the subdivision where Valdecantos lives.

Valdecantos was rushed to a nearby hospital before police officers arrived at the crime scene. Police officer Angelito Roxas told CMFR in a phone interview a few hours after the incident that Valdecantos was already in stable condition.

Roxas said that they had already identified one of the suspects but that they were waiting to get Valdecantos' testimony once he is cleared by his attending physician.

Valdecantos is a member of the National Press Club and according to the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines, previously worked for the tabloids People's Tonight and Imbestigador.

Roxas added that Valdecantos told a friend about a death threat prior to the incident, but Roxas could not say what the motive was behind the attack.
