ANHRI condemns detention of intellectuals, media workers

(ANHRI/IFEX) - ANHRI condemns the actions of the Syrian security forces on 13 July 2011 when they forcefully dispersed a peaceful gathering held in Damascus, the capital. Security officers arrested a number of intellectuals, artists, lawyers and human rights activists demanding political reforms and the development of a solution to deal with police repression against peaceful demonstrators.

Syrian security forces arrested the following people:

- Nabil Al-Maleh (director)
- Ahmed Malas
- Yam Machhadi
- Mohammed Aal-Rashi
- Iyad Shurabagi (Vice-Chairman of the Arab Union for young journalists)
- Guevara Nemr
- Sasha Ayoub
- Mohamed Zakir Al- Khalil
- Rima Fulehan (human rights activist)
- Fadi Zeidan
- Nedal Hasan
- Sarah Al-Taweel
- Dana Baqdones
- Rami Al-A'seq
- Abdul- Aziz Al-Doraid (activist)
- Khaled Taga (artist)

Among the demands of the protestors were that the authorities stop using violence against civilians, punish those responsible for massacres committed against the Syrian people and stop inciting the official media against peaceful demonstrators.

"The Syrian regime is ignoring all moral considerations and international covenants on human rights, violating all rights of citizenship, and using oppression and repression to confront peaceful protestors," said ANHRI.

"The international community must put pressure on Syrian authorities to stop the massacres that occur daily against innocent civilians and immediately release thousands of arbitrarily detained prisoners."
