Reporter assaulted in Izmir

(BIANET/IFEX) - On 25 July 2010, journalist Cevdet Sen, a reporter for the Dogan News Agency (DHA) in the city of Kinik, was assaulted because of a news report he had written about a raid on a pharmacy.

An 18-year old man with the initials F.K. reportedly struck Sen on the head with a hard object. The incident occurred at the local teachers' house in the district of Kinik in Izmir. The assailant then fled the scene.

Sen was taken to the Kinik Health Centre where he received first aid. He was then transferred to the Bergama State Hospital.

According to Tahsin Tuna, from the website, Sen did not suffer serious injuries. The journalist told Tuna, "I was hit on the head three times in a row. I did not understand what was going on. I do not have any problems with anybody".

In a telephone call, Sen informed District Governor Ilyas Gul about the assault. He demanded that the authorities identify the perpetrator as soon as possible.

F.K. was later arrested and taken into custody by the police. The young man had previously been accused of breaking the shop windows of a pharmacy owned by Ziya Sarvan, former Kinik District Mayor of the Justice and Development Party (AKP). F.K. allegedly attacked Sen because of his news report on the raid.
