National Guard members prevent RCTV reporters from covering stadium inauguration

(IPYS/IFEX) - On 19 June 2007, RCTV television station journalist Yamile Jiménez and camera operator Jesús Molina were prevented by members of the National Guard (Guardia Nacional) from covering the inauguration of the Pueblo Nuevo Olympic Stadium in San Cristóbal, southern Venezuela. The guards allowed all other public and private media outlets to attend the ceremony and did not explain to the RCTV reporters why they were forbidden entry.

The station has broadcast its news programme through other media outlets, such as Globovisión and Colombia's Caracol Internacional, and through its web page RCTV.NET, ever since it stopped broadcasting through an open signal on 27 May because of the government's decision to not renew the station's broadcasting license (see IFEX alerts of 30, 29 May, 26, 25, 19, and 12 April 2007, and others).
