National Guard prevents Globovisión journalist from carrying out her work

(IPYS/IFEX) - On 21 November 2008, National Guard officers prevented Lisette Villafranca, a Globovisón television station journalist, from entering part of the Santa Cruz del Este neighborhood in Baruta, Miranda state, east of Caracas, when she was attempting to document the damages caused recently by severe rainfalls.

Villafranca said that teams of journalists from other media outlets were permitted access. A few moments earlier, in another part of Santa Cruz del Este, Villafranca had attempted to obtain a statement from Miranda's governor, Diosdado Cabello, who was in the area to check on the damage. Cabello, however, told the journalist that he would not give a statement to Globovisión and accused the station of failing to tell the truth. The journalist was then evicted from the area by National Guard officers.

IPYS condemns this type of action that discriminates against specific media outlets.
