Suspected explosives found outside press group's headquarters

(IPYS/IFEX) - On 8 September 2009, a security guard working for the Bloque de Armas press group, the headquarters of which are in central Caracas, found two small cases that, it was suspected, contained explosives.

Members of the General Division of the Intelligence and Prevention Services (DISIP), the Department for Scientific, Penal and Criminal Investigations (CICPC), the Capital District's Fire Brigade and the Metropolitan Police were called to the area where they ordered the closure of the road where the press group is located. The company's nearly 400 workers were evacuated.

The cases were black and had clocks on them. The DISIP's Anti-explosives Brigade took the material for analysis.

No group has claimed responsibility for the incident thus far. The police investigating the case were not expected to make any statements until 14 September.

Bloque de Armas owns newspapers, magazines, publishing houses, and publications distribution companies. Its representatives do not know what could have led to the suspected attack.
