School headmaster dismissed after informing press of H1N1 flu cases

(IPYS-Venezuela/IFEX) - 13 April 2011 - On 7 April 2011, Manuel Aldana, headmaster of the public school Rafael Antonio Godoy, was removed from his position after informing the press that there were some cases of the H1N1 flu in the school located in the city of Mérida, western Venezuela.

The measure was taken after Aldana told the "Correo del Orinoco" newspaper that two of the children in the school were carriers of the virus. As a result of these statements, the regional government was forced to provide the media with accurate information on the number of children suffering from the virus and to suspend classes.

The Venezuelan Teachers Federation (Federación Venezolana de Maestros, FVM) and other associations protested against Aldana's dismissal, suspending classes in the school on 8 April.
